AFGE Legislative and Political Action Plan and Goals

The program shown below was adopted by our Union's leadership to deal with
upcoming issues affecting Federal and District of Columbia employees.

Legislative and Political Action Ten-Point Plan -- It Works!!
1: Recruit a Mobilization Coordinator for your
Local and each worksite
- Local should commit to all elements of the
AFGE 10 point program
- Local schedules regular strategy and planning
meetings
2: Build Mobilization Network capable of
contacting all worksites
- Recruit activists for mobilization network
- Build communications tree with home e-mails
and work and home phone numbers of all Executive Board members, stewards and
other network volunteers. Use non-government computer whenever
possible
- All Executive Board members, stewards and
network volunteers must sign up for AFGE's Action News
- Leaflet worksites on priority issues once per
month
- Generate action faxes, letters, telephone
calls and e-mails, as needed, to elected officials on priority issues
- Schedule regular meetings with Representatives
and Senators and/or their staff on priority issues (in the home District or
State offices of the elected officials)
3: Maximize communication with co-workers,
family members and community through workplace surveys, worksite "lunch and
learns", town meetings, union publications, bulletin boards, mailings and
press releases
- Discuss priority issues and their impact's.
Include actions that can be taken to address the issues
- Report back to members on key votes.
Discuss impact of votes and follow-up mobilization actions
- Link all these activities with new member
recruitment
- Build working relationships with area
Central Labor Councils and State Federation bodies
4: Maximize communications and
coordination between AFGE Locals both locally and State-wide
- Schedule regular strategy meetings
- Develop communications network
5: Maximize impact of mobilization
activities through union phone calls to AFGE members
- Two calls to members at home until November
encouraging them to get involved in grassroots activities and by
contributing to AFGE PAC
6: Update Locals' membership lists
- Regularly update add and drop forms
- Work with Central Labor Council or State
Federation body to develop a quality list with phone numbers, voter
registration and change of address information
- Add data field in membership lists to track
volunteers
7: Increase Voter Registration by 10%
8: Use mobilization network for
get-out-the-vote activities
- During 2006 Primary Elections
- During 2006 Congressional Elections
9: Use mobilization network to sign up
potential AFGE members
- Make Standard Forms 1187, voter
registration forms and AFGE Action News sign-up forms available at all
"lunch and learns" and other activities coordinated by the
mobilization network
- Regularly copy Standard Forms 1187 on one
side of issue fliers and other legislative/political action materials
10: Build AFGE-PAC and AFGE-LAF
- Achieve National Executive Council goal of
100% participation in AFGE-PAC by all Locals' Executive Board members and
stewards
- Develop an ongoing AFGE-PAC recruitment
program with a goal of enrolling at least 10% of each Local's members
- Make Local's annual AFGE-LAF contribution
of $2.00 per member
